Join Anti-Poverty Network SA and guests in launching their campaign: ‘It’s Time To Raise Newstart!!’
The Australian Labor Party holds ‘a fair go for all’ as one of its key values. But they refuse to commit, clear and firmly, to raising the rate of Newstart.
With a federal election on the way, It’s Time they had the conversation, and committed to a significant, long-overdue increase.
Newstart, at $273 per week, is over $160 per week below the poverty-line. It has not been raised in real terms since 1994. Australia ranks second-worst in the developed world for poverty rates among the unemployed.
We are not the only ones who think this is a problem. Leading welfare organisations like ACOSS, Uniting Communities, Anglicare, and more, have called for an increase. And it is not just welfare organisations: KPMG, Deloitte Access Economics, and the Business Council of Australia have all recently called for an increase.
It is a no brainer!! Tell the ALP: come on, IT’S TIME!!
