Under labor and liberal governments, the Newstart allowance has not increased in real terms for 24 years. On May 10th 2018, labor and liberal with independents voted down a motion put forward by Senator Rachel Siewert to increase Newstart by $75 a week. (Bless her for trying again) Adding further insult to injury, are the politicians who have the effrontery to say they can live on $40 a day.
The political climate surrounding Social Security Benefits reminds me of Marie Antoinette, the French Queen who was told by one of her servants that, “The people are starving they don’t have enough to eat.” She replied, “Let them eat cake.” Whether the quote is true or apocryphal, I don’t know. But like the King and Queen of France, Australian politicians are disregarding the needs of some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in Australia.
Economically disadvantaged people like the pensioners and unemployed can teach the politicians a lesson and fight back!
Did you know there are approximately 4,900,00 adults on benefits? In addition, there are another 900,000 plus unemployed people who don’t collect benefits, as well as over 1,000,000 part-time workers who want more hours but can’t get them. That’s about 6,800,000 people. There will be a federal election next year, and I would like to hear the voices of the unemployed and pensioners ring loud and clear.
Thanks for reading and don’t forget to sign and mention the petition regarding the right to Social Security in your other tweets.
