Do you manage an official AUWU branch email account? An essential organizing tool is the ability to send mailouts to your local members.
The AUWU uses the organising platform Action Network to manage our 4,500+ database of members.
We encourage you to email your branch members via Action Network. This way we can keep our national membership list up to date, and you can do mass emails (or “mailouts”) more easily. You can add new members to the database, by simply filling in the membership form on this website (“Get Involved” button).
Using Action Network to send emails might seem confusing at first, but once you have sent one email, you will see it takes just a few simple steps. Contact the AUWU if you would like someone to walk you through it.
Before you can start sending emails to your local AUWU members via Action Network, you will need to set up an Action Network account and get permission to send emails using this account. Then you can do mailouts.
Below are step by step guides to:
Guide to setting up Action Network account
- If you have not already received an account login or invitation, email secretary@unemployedworkersunion.com and request access to Action Network for emails.
- After verifying your identity and branch location, the AUWU will send you an email inviting you to join the Action Network data base. It will look something like this:
- Click on the link and fill in the boxes to make your account. You can sign up with your personal or branch name, and make your own password.
It will look something like this:
Once you have signed up, the AUWU will need to manually give you permission to access the emails, in order for you to send email. Please email the AUWU if this has not happened after 24 hours.
Guide to using your Action Network account to send emails
- Got to https://actionnetwork.org, and log in.
- Click: Start Organizing > People > Create Email
The screen will look something like this:
- Type in the subject of your email in the subject box.
- Type in the AUWU branch email address in the “reply to” box.
- Write your email to AUWU members in the box below the formatting options
- Click “Save and Target Your Email” button at the bottom of the page.
- Choose the Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union email list, if it is not already selected.
- Now you can select AUWU members in your area from the nationwide database. You will see the onscreen page is divided into “include” on the left, and “exclude” on the right. You are going to “include” people who live within a certain radius of your post code. Scroll down until you come to the “Zip/Postal Code And Radius” field. Type your postcode in the box on the “include” side of the page. Select the radius target area (5 to 100 miles, depending on the area you wish to target). To send to entire list, leave this part blank.
- Click the “Save, Preview and Send” button at the bottom of the page. (If you do not see this button, refresh the page in your browser. Reloading the page tells the database to calculate how many AUWU members you are targeting.)
- Once the targeting is complete, click “Send Email”. You also have the option to “Schedule Email” for a future time and day.
- Responses to your mass email will come into the email account you input as the “reply to” in step 4.
