Raise the Rate Campaign

Newcastle Anti-poverty Alliance is calling upon the Newcastle City Council to endorse a rise in Newstart and other welfare payments.

The Newcastle AUWU branch under the auspices of the Newcastle Anti-poverty Alliance has won the support of key local government councillors to have presented in the local council chamber a motion that will see the local government issue a public statement in support of a reasonable rise in all welfare & student payments and in particular a rise in the Newstart allowance. We consider this a significant milestone in our branch struggle for recognition and dignity for the thousands of local Hunter/ Newcastle residents who live below the poverty line.
